USN Bell Hanger

Postby USNCWO » Tue Sep 06, 2011 4:05 pm

I just got a USN bell which I beleive is a Power Boat Bell. It measures 9 3/4" at the bell, weighs 20lbs, 9 1/2" high, USN letters are 7/8" high. Does anyone know where I can get a verticle brass hanger? The through bolt for mounting the hanger is 1/2" diameter, and comes out the top of bell. Can supply pics if needed. Thank you.

If this is a cast steel bell, it was made by the CSBell Foundry during WWII. You can get a right angle mount in a hardware store or have one made from steel wrought iron.

It is not steel, I think it is copper.

If the bell does not hold a magnet and is in fact bronze, look up inside the bell in the crown for lettering. Bronze Forecastle bells were manufactured by the Morris Greenberg Sons Foundry of San Francisco for the US Navy. Unfortunately, they were liquidated in 1970 and it may be difficult to obtain a bracket. If you enter Greenberg in the search box in the upper right corner of this page, you should be able to obtain pictures of Greenberg bells from their catalogs that might help if you need to get a bracket fabricated by a bronze founder.

Thank you for the info. I can't find any markings inside of the bell.

I have a very similar bell, and I am also looking for the same part.
If you do find someone that will recreate this mounting arm please post your info.

I believe there are several of us needing similar mounts.

The bell is out for restoration at this time. Several former owners tried to polish it in many spots ruining the patina.
Restoration was a good option with the damage.
The bell will be ready Friday.
You will notice the arm or mount is aluminum in this photo. The bell is possibly pre WWI. I would like to find a brass or bronze arm to complete the restoration.

This is the restored bell pictured in the previous post. I was able to locate a brass mounting arm from Loffeler Corp.
I hope this helps.

Hard to tell, but I think it's made of brass....most likely a WW2 US Navy bell. Usually a new bell would be engraved, etc. by crew members of the ship onboard in their machine shop.

Try bellsandbirmans.com for spare parts.

I will not be using my aluminum arm pictured in the photo.
If anyone is interested let me know. I have $40 invested. You can have it for that.
It has been cleaned and brushed to a fine finsih. Ready for Battleship gray.........

This is more of a favor than a sale,so I hope the site forgives me.

Your aluminum mounting looks identical to the bronze mounting that would have been original. You might use it as a pattern fro a bronze casting of a similar mounting to be more authentic.

Mr. Long you have a great idea.
I will look into the cost of having the piece cast in brass.
I will post the results here in the next couple of weeks. If anyone wants a copy. I will provide vender information as I obtain it.
Thanks

I contacted a vendor in Tacoma Washington.
He is willing to cast the arms in brass for a very reasonable cost.

I informed him that there was a shortage of the mounting arm units, and he would be free to make a mold and sell these units on his own.
The aluminum arm is heading to Washington today.
