Brass or Bronze? 16 3/8 inche bell Info?

Postby pho67 » Mon Aug 22, 2011 9:01 pm

Hello, I'm new here and need some help... I dug up my fathers old bell, it was up on the cottage for years before it was stored in the shed for a while I decided to restore it but wanted to get some info on it, my dad bought it from a priest that needed money for his church, I'm from a small town in Northern Ontario, Canada. This bell looks like a one piece, clapper is 2 pieces looped in middle, threaded to the top attached by nut type topper. Bottom diameter 16 3/8, top diameter 8 1/2 inches, hight of bell 12 1/2, clapper 13 3/4 - 22 inches to top of threads. It has a huge washer that has this stamped in it ( S A 234 ). I will try to include some pictures...

Sounds like a brass locomotive bell. Many of them ended up in churches, schools, and private ownership. Uploading a photo directly to this website is not difficult.

Ooops I'm trying to fix it let me know...
It sure is big for a locomotive? could that be why the rope arm is strait down?

These bells range in size from about a foot to eighteen inches. Some have the rope arm pointed downward.
