Help needed to identify a Ship's? bell

Postby natty » Tue Oct 18, 2011 3:13 pm

Can anyone supply any info on the following Bell.

It has a crude crown makers mark with E P underneath. Next to it is stamped SCC 6/53 and under that in a cirlcle is SC with a C below and 7 below that.

On the reverse is stamped AF 334

The bell is 9" tall and 9.75" wide at the widest part.

It has a cast iron clapper and part of the original leather strop attached

Any information would be gratefully received

Natty,

Are you sure that is E.P. and not E.R. (Elizabeth Regina)? Elizabeth Regina is Queen Elizabeth II, the reigning monarch in England. She was crowned on June 2, 1953 (6/53).

Hi Carolyn

It is Definately EP, and I am from the UK and am aware of the ER thing, the crown is far too crude for that

I remember seeing this bell when it was listed on eBay several months ago
and advertised as a Queen Mary Quarterdeck or Signal bell.
Beyond that, I know nothing about it.

Using your new picture, it seems to me as if there is the beginning of the descender stroke
in the R. The right side of the crown also looks more shallow than the left.
If so, there might have been a casting flaw.

The Queen Elizabeth was delivered in 1938 and referred to Elizabeth, then Queen Consort and later Queen Mother of the current queen Elizabeth II. Yet, if 6/53 is a date, then it might point to the current queen and not the liner.

The Cunard Line operated both vessals. You might try to contact them and see if they have any information.
