Defects are in the eye of the beholder.

Here is another Oni bell, a top quality lost wax cast figural,
with a lighter patina than the one shown in Devils and Demons:

I have no idea why there is a hole in the base, how it was made,
or what purpose (if any) it may have been intended to serve.

Most potential buyers probably thought the hole a sufficient defect to pass it by, and the bell sold for $9.00.
What can you buy for that price? The bargains are still out there, if you can find them.
