Wonderful Church Bell

Postby Glockensammler » Tue Aug 02, 2011 11:00 am

Well, actually I collect only small table bells. But when I came across
this church bell I could not resist and tried everything to get it.

Some of you may have seen this bell already when visiting my
website under "new aquisitions". For those who have not I add the
following pictures.

The bell is 27 cms. high, has a diameter of 27,5 cms.
and a weight of 8,8 kgs.
The origin seems to be in Bavaria in Germany and it was
probably part of a chapel in a castle or private estate.

Hi Robert,

Great!! Could you include some pictures and give further details about your bell.
I am very interested to see what you have.
Is your bell also from Bavaria? How about the decoration on the outside?

Now, this bell is a treasure for both of these men! Manfred (Glockensammler) lives in Germany so this handsome bell was made in his homeland. Robert is the owner of Cowie Wine Cellars and Vineyards in Paris, Arkansas, and makes award-winning wine so the wonderful bunch of grapes on one side of the bell is appropriate for him! Isn't it wonderful how bells bring joy to our lives?

Here are some pictures of my bell. I was told it was an Italian school bell.

Robert,

Manfred's bell, with a crown mount, has a diameter and height of approximately 11 inches, and a weight just under 20 pounds. His clapper does not have an eye loop at the lower end to attach a rope, so it must have been swung to ring.

How do those compare to your bell, with a tang mount?

Robert,

thanks for the photos. Fantastic, we have the same type of bell and I am sure she comes out of the same foundry inspite of the differences mentioned by Alan. I am also very interested to learn the details according to Alan`s message to you. Anyhow your bell came a long way from Italy to the US.

Looking forward to your additional information.

My bell is 11 inches in height, and 10.5 inches wide. The top is not a crown, and the clapper does not have a ring on it. I found this bell on the internet.

Robert,

thanks for the additional information. Ours seem therefore to be identical except for the detail of the crown.

By the way I found my one also in the internet (in Germany).

Have a nice day.

Another of these bells was sold recently on French eBay. The dimensions and weight seem to match the first two bells. It has a tang mount, like Robert's. The seller says that it came from a farm in Burgundy.
